BACKYARD ARUs
TRANSFORMING SPACES, ELEVATING LIVES
INTRODUCTION
The housing crisis demands innovative solutions that address both affordability and availability. The Backyard ARU Initiative proposes a replicable program aimed at creating sustainable solutions to this pressing issue. By partnering with Solutions for Attainable Living (SAL) and engaging residents to host Accessory Residential Units (ARUs) in their backyards, this program seeks to provide affordable housing options while fostering community collaboration. SAL is piloting this program in Grey Bruce, Ontario.
Program Overview
Residents
The Backyard ARU Initiative will collaborate closely with Grey Bruce residents to facilitate the placement of ARUs in their backyards.
Option 1
Homeowners offer to lease a portion of their yard for the ARU, with the lessee purchasing the unit and paying a lease fee for land use.
Option 2
Homeowners will purchase the unit themselves and lease both the unit and space to a new tenant in need of housing.
grassroots approach
By harnessing under-utilized spaces and resources within the community, this program aims to generate sustainable housing solutions.
Reasons to Create ARUs
Financial
Rental income generated from tenants provides an additional revenue stream, which can be utilized to cover mortgage payments and other essential expenses.
Economy
Supplementary housing options play a vital role in bolstering the economic vitality of communities and industries by attracting and retaining skilled workers.
Solution
ARUs offer a solution to the demand for affordable rental housing suitable for young adults, seniors, seasonal workers, and newcomers.
Environment
Smaller sized ARU’s designed to be more energy efficient, reduces the environmental impact of new housing developments.
Unlocking the Potential
Host a Presentation
Hosting an information presentation in your area on the Backyard ARU program offers a unique opportunity to engage with community members and stakeholders alike. Through informative discussions and interactive sessions, attendees can gain valuable insights into the benefits and feasibility of implementing Accessory Residential Units (ARUs) in their own backyards. From addressing housing shortages to exploring sustainable living options, the presentation serves as a platform to educate and empower individuals about the potential of ARUs in enhancing local neighborhoods and fostering inclusive communities.
